DNC Remote Option

DNC Remote is an iPhone and Android app that controls DNC Server 4.0 over a Wi-Fi connection. If you have your CNC machines connected by serial cable like you normally would when using DNC Server and have a wireless router conected to your PC then you can control DNC Server remotely from the machine on the shop floor. As you know, most of the pain in uploading and downloading is going back and forth between the machine and the PC which is in the office. You have to go to the office to look up the file you want and get it ready. Then back at the machine when you push the wrong button or enter the wrong number you have to go back and start again. Uploading and downloading to machines with DNC Server can be easy enough, and there is the AutoServe feature that can automate some things. But now this is taken another step further. If everyone is going to smart phone devices, then you might as well make good use of them.

Remote
You download the app from the Apple app store. The IOS app can be used on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Android requires ver 5.0 and up. It can be downloaded from Google Play. The app is free. You have to buy the PC DNC Server software for it to do anything.
DNC Remote
Think of it as a remote control - it doesn't do anything of itself, it is just like pushing the buttons on the real DNC Server. (DNC Server has to be running for it to work) The normal sequence of operation: Status - This retrieves the current state of DNC Server. The Status line displayed is the same status line displayed on DNC Server. It also loads the machine list with the list of machines and shows the current machine. Machine: - Tapping the Machine edit box brings up the Picker where you can change the current machine the same way as at DNC Server.
Find File: - The Find File button brings up the file folder page. Push the Refresh button to get a list of the same folders and files as currently displayed at DNC Server. You can navigate through the entire PC file system hierarchy by pressing the Up Next Level button to go up, and pressing a folder shown on the list to go down. Folders are shown with the folder icon on them. To call up the file you want to tranfer to the machine you press on one of the files on the list. This displays the filename on the Main page next to "File:". This is the file that DNC Server is going to send to the machine when you press "Send". The file list is limited to displaying a maximum of 100 files. This is so it wont get bogged down in case there is a folder with thousands of files in it. If you have thousands of files it is recommended to divide them up into separate folders to make it easier to find things. Also, if you know the name of the file you want you can use the "Filename" button to just get that file.

Filter File List: If you have many files in your directories you dont want to have to scroll through them finding the one you want. Press the Filter button to bring up the filter window.
Receive: - Pressing the Receive button on the remote is the same as pressing the Receive button at DNC Server. DNC Server is now ready to receive whatever you send it. When used with the Remote, DNC Server always automatically saves the file when it finishes receiving it. This means it is important to set DNC Server so it knows when the end of the file is. CNC controls usually send a character #20 at the end of the file to tell this. The name of the file is the file name that is displayed on the Main page. So you either have to go to the Find File page and choose it, or if you want a new file name that doesn't exist, use the Save As button.
Waiting For Data
Filename: - This button brings up an edit box you can enter the new file name into. To lessen the pain of a lot of typing on the device, if you don't put a file extension, it will use the default file extension in DNC Server settings. If there is no path, it will use the current path. After the file is saved you probably want to know if it was really saved correctly. You can do this by finding the file on the Find File page and looking at the size and date. The size in bytes is shown in parentheses. And you can view the file by pressing the View File button. View File: - This button loads the current file into the viewer. This is only for viewing - you cannot edit or save it. The view file page will only display the first 50000 characters of the file.

Settings: There are only two settings to fill in. You get these numbers from DNC Server - Main Menu - Settings - Remote Control. Settings at DNC Server: At DNC Server go to Main Menu - Settings - App Settings - Options. Use Remote Mobile App - None of the remote control functions will work if this is not checked. If you are not using the Remote feature this should be unchecked. The dropdown box for the IP Address attempts to get the network IP address of the PC running DNC Server. This is usually the correct one, but it is possible that your computer is using multiple IP addresses. You will have to investigate which one looks like the real one. Opening a DOS command window and using "ipconfig /all" might help in finding out. Port: 80 is the default port which should be fine. You would only need to change this if there is already some web server on the computer that is using that port number. If you have a firewall on the computer, you will have to make sure this port number is allowed to be used. When DNC Server is first started up after installation there probably will be a normal Windows dialog box asking if want to allow DNC Server to be allowed access through the firewall. You can press the Allow Access button. This will automatically create a firewall setting that will allow DNC Server to communicate with DNC Remote. DNC Server is made so it will be usable in manual mode also when "Use Remote" is on. So it can be used either way. But Auto-Serve mode cannot be used at the same time as Remote mode. They are mutually exclusive. If you are not using the remote control feature it is best to turn off "Use Remote" so it will not interfere with normal operations.
A Remote Option license allows you to install the option on either Single or Site License of DNC Server. You will enter into Activation window the Order Reference Number you receive in the email. Buy License for Remote Option $30.00 Buy Now Use Remote
Send: - The Send and Receive buttons do the same as the Send and Receive buttons on DNC Server but it may seem backwards when you are standing at the machine. You will just have to remember that you are running DNC Server remotely from your hand. When you press the Send button you will see the status line display "Waiting for Remote Start" if DNC Server is set to "Wait for signal from machine". Actually, that setting is not so important with the remote control since you only needed it because you had to take the time to walk from the PC back to the machine. But since you are standing at the machine now, you could set DNC Server to send immediatly. You could press Read at the control and then press Send on DNC Remote.
